The European Bureau for Conscientious Objection (EBCO) condemns once again the unacceptable practice of the Greek authorities to target and prosecute conscientious objectors. EBCO demands the repeal of the conviction of the President of the Association of Greek Conscientious Objectors Yiannis Glarnetatzis, who is on trial tomorrow before the Appeal Military Court of Thessaloniki.

Το Ευρωπαϊκό Γραφείο για την Αντίρρηση Συνείδησης (EBCO) (www.ebco-beoc.org) είναι σοκαρισμένο από αυτό που συνέβη σήμερα στο Αναθεωρητικό Στρατοδικείο Αθηνών, όπου ο Έλληνας αντιρρησίας συνείδησης Δημήτρης Κ. Σωτηρόπουλος κρίθηκε ένοχος και πάλι με την κατηγορία της ανυποταξίας και καταδικάστηκε σε 10 μήνες φυλάκιση με αναστολή μετά από μια σαφώς άδικη δίκη με προβληματικές διαδικασίες.

The European Bureau for Conscientious Objection (EBCO) (www.ebco-beoc.org) is shocked at what happened today in the Appeal Military Court of Athens, where the Greek conscientious objector Dimitris K. Sotiropoulos was found guilty again on an insubordination charge and was sentenced to 10-month suspended imprisonment after a clearly unfair trial with problematic procedures.

“The European Bureau for Conscientious Objection (EBCO) urges the new government of Greece to finally turn the page and put a definite end to the scandalous prosecutions of conscientious objectors and the blatant violations of their human rights in Greece.

«Το Ευρωπαϊκό Γραφείο για την Αντίρρηση Συνείδησης (EBCO) καλεί τη νέα κυβέρνηση της Ελλάδας να γυρίσει επιτέλους σελίδα και να θέσει οριστικό τέλος στις σκανδαλώδεις διώξεις εναντίον των αντιρρησιών συνείδησης και τις κατάφορες παραβιάσεις των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων τους στην Ελλάδα.

Αύριο, 16/06/2015, δικάζεται στο Αναθεωρητικό Στρατοδικείο Αθηνών ο αντιρρησίας συνείδησης Δημήτρης K. Σωτηρόπουλος. Ο Σωτηρόπουλος, 48 ετών και ιδρυτικό μέλος του Συνδέσμου Αντιρρησιών Συνείδησης, ήδη από το 1992 αρνήθηκε να στρατευτεί, διακήρυξε δημόσια την εναντίωσή του στη βία και τον μιλιταρισμό και ζήτησε να εκπληρώσει ισότιμη εναλλακτική κοινωνική υπηρεσία. Πρωτόδικα, και έχοντας ήδη απαλλαγεί της στράτευσης ως τρίτεκνος, καταδικάστηκε σε φυλάκιση 10 μηνών με αναστολή, 23 χρόνια μετά την αρχική του ανυποταξία.

Tomorrow, 16/06/2015, the case of conscientious objector Dimitris K. Sotiropoulos will be heard before the Appeal Military Court of Athens. Sotiropoulos, 48 years old and a founding member of the Greek Association of Conscientious Objectors, has refused to enlist since 1992, declared publicly his opposition to violence and militarism, and asked to perform an equal alternative civilian service.
